I have the honour to enclose for your information April/03 a copy of a letter which we have received from our Bullion Brokers as to the urgent demand for silver for the Hong Kong coinage now in course of execution made upon us by your letter of the 22nd instant.
In your letter of the 8th instant you informed us that the coinage could be undertaken by the Mint and that 500,000 ounces of silver were required to be delivered after the Easter holidays.
3. We accordingly instructed our Brokers to purchase and deliver the silver to the Mint as requested by you and the final instalment of the order was delivered to you on the 25th instant.
4. We have now further instructed our Brokers in compliance with your letter of the 22nd instant to obtain the further and immediate supply of silver, amounting to 1,000,000 ounces standard demanded, but it will be seen from their enclosed reply that they are experiencing great difficulty in meeting your requirements.
5. It is of course obvious that the necessity to buy large quantities of silver at short notice is very prejudicial to the interests of the Government of Hong Kong and I beg to request that you will in future give us longer notice of your requirements.
I am &c. &c. &c.
